How to Fade Dark Spots and Hyperpigmentation
Dark spots, post-acne marks and uneven tone are some of the most common — and most frustrating — skin concerns. The good news: with the right ingredients and patience, hyperpigmentation can genuinely fade.
What causes dark spots?
- Sun exposure — the number one cause of pigmentation
- Post-inflammatory marks left behind after acne or irritation
- Hormonal changes (melasma)
The ingredients that work
- Vitamin C — brightens and interrupts excess pigment production.
- Niacinamide — fades marks and evens tone while strengthening the barrier.
- Alpha-arbutin and tranexamic acid — targeted brighteners for stubborn spots.
- Gentle exfoliation (AHA/PHA) — speeds up cell turnover to fade marks faster.
The one step you can’t skip
Sunscreen. Without daily SPF50+, dark spots will keep darkening and any progress you make will be undone. UV protection isn’t optional when treating pigmentation — it’s the most important step.
A realistic timeline
Hyperpigmentation fades slowly. Surface marks may improve in 4–8 weeks, while deeper pigmentation can take several months of consistent care. Avoid picking at breakouts, which causes more marks, and be patient.
A simple anti-spot routine
Cleanse, apply a vitamin C or brightening serum in the morning, moisturise, and finish with SPF. At night, you can add a gentle exfoliant or niacinamide a few times a week. Consistency is what fades spots — not any single miracle product.
