Retinol for Beginners: How to Start Without Irritation
Retinol (a form of vitamin A) is one of the most researched and effective anti-ageing ingredients available. It speeds up cell turnover, boosts collagen and helps smooth fine lines, refine pores and fade dark spots. The catch? Start too fast and you’ll end up red, flaky and discouraged. Here’s how to do it right.
What retinol does
- Smooths fine lines and wrinkles
- Improves firmness and elasticity
- Refines texture and minimises pores
- Helps fade pigmentation and post-acne marks
How to start (the slow approach)
Begin with a low concentration and use it just 2–3 nights a week. Apply a pea-sized amount to clean, dry skin in the evening, then follow with moisturiser. As your skin adjusts over a few weeks, you can gradually increase frequency.
The “sandwich” method
If your skin is sensitive, apply a layer of moisturiser, then your retinol, then more moisturiser. This buffers the active and reduces irritation while your skin builds tolerance.
What to avoid
- Don’t combine retinol with AHA/BHA exfoliants on the same night.
- Don’t use it in the morning — retinol is for night use only.
- Always wear SPF50+ daily, as retinol increases sun sensitivity.
Is purging normal?
Some people experience a short “purge” of small breakouts as cell turnover speeds up. This usually settles within a few weeks. Persistent redness or stinging, however, means you’re going too fast — scale back. Pair retinol with calming, hydrating products and our anti-aging set makes it easy to build a balanced routine.
