Double Cleansing: What It Is and How to Do It Properly

Light Cleansing Oil

Double cleansing is the cornerstone of Korean skincare — and the single best habit you can build for clear, healthy skin. It simply means cleansing twice in the evening: first with an oil-based cleanser, then with a water-based one.

Why cleanse twice?

Throughout the day your skin collects sunscreen, makeup, sebum and pollution. Most of these are oil-based, and water-based cleansers alone can’t fully remove them. An oil cleanser dissolves oil-based grime, while the second water-based cleanser clears away sweat, dirt and any leftover residue. The result is a truly clean face — without scrubbing or stripping.

Step 1: Oil cleanser or balm

On dry skin and dry hands, massage an oil cleanser or cleansing balm over your face for 30–60 seconds, paying attention to areas with makeup or sunscreen. Add a little lukewarm water to emulsify it into a milky texture, then rinse.

Step 2: Water-based cleanser

Follow with a gentle, low-pH gel or foam cleanser to remove anything left behind. Look for a low pH (around 5.5) so it cleanses without disrupting your skin barrier.

How often should you double cleanse?

Double cleanse in the evening only. In the morning, your skin is already relatively clean — a single gentle cleanse (or even just water) is enough. Over-cleansing is one of the most common causes of dryness and irritation.

Tips for every skin type

  • Oily/acne-prone: choose a lightweight oil cleanser and a low-pH gel; double cleansing actually helps keep pores clear.
  • Dry/sensitive: pick a nourishing balm and a creamy, fragrance-free second cleanser.
  • Always: use lukewarm — never hot — water, and pat (don’t rub) your skin dry.
